F1: McLaren gets Pioneering and Innovation award

The technology arm of the McLaren Formula 1 team has received the Pioneering & Innovation Award at the Autosport Awards.

With its origins dating back to 1991, McLaren Applied Technologies' activities stretch well beyond F1, for which the brand is best known. While the company's solutions feature on every F1 car, IndyCar and NASCAR, it also works in industries as diverse as air traffic control and healthcare.

Technical director Caroline Hargrove accepted the award from 1996 F1 world champion Damon Hill.

"We're really lucky to have so many good engineers in Formula 1 and it's an attraction around the world," Hargrove said. "People come here to do engineering in motorsport and to be able to capitalise on that and to use it in areas like healthcare is something we never thought we'd get to do."
