LM24: ACO considering pre-race BoP changes to GTE-Pro

Facing increased pressure from affected GTE-Pro teams after a

wildly unbalanced qualifying session

Wednesday night, the ACO now says it could make Balance of Performance adjustments prior to Saturday's race.

Ford's brand-new twin-turbo V6 GT model dominated the two-hour nighttime qualifying session as its four cars placed P1-2-4-5, Ferrari's brand-new twin-turbo V8 488 was next with a P3-6-7, and the other seven cars, all non-turbos from Aston Martin, Corvette, and Porsche, were dreadfully uncompetitive.

Porsche, the closest the non-turbos, was 3.733 seconds off the best Ford GT, and it only got worse for Aston (4.076 seconds) and Corvette (4.663 seconds). According to ACO technical director Vincent Beaumesnil, the Le Mans organizers might tighten the reins on the cars running freely and loosen the noose on those left in their wake.

"I haven't had time to discuss Wednesday qualifying with the teams yet, but we are for sure making an analysis," Beaumesnil told DailySportsCar.com. "You know how things are in GTE, you never know how it really is. The idea of Balance of Performance is to give the same performance to everyone, but you need to know that what you're seeing on track is everyone at the top of their performance.

"Sometimes you see it during the race, so we have to analyze all these things before making a decision. We need to know if what we see is the real performance. Telemetry can tell us this, but it's not a five-minute job to look at it. We can still change the BoP on Friday night if we want – of course it's something we will look at."
