Herta misses F2 Sprint after heavy qualifying crash
Colton Herta sat out the opening Formula 2 race of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend following a heavy crash in qualifying.
The Cadillac third driver originally qualified 12th for the two races at the Madring, but crashed heavily at the end of the qualifying session when he was looking to improve his time on his final run. Ahead of Saturday’s sprint race, Formula 2 and his team Hitech announced that Herta had withdrawn “after feeling unwell” but offered no further details.

RACER understands Herta is suffering from concussion-like symptoms and his withdrawal was a precautionary measure, with the Californian set to be assessed again to see if he can compete in Sunday morning’s feature race.
Herta has had a tough run in recent rounds of his debut Formula 2 season, with his last point-scoring result coming in the feature race at Spa-Francorchamps in July. The former IndyCar driver has dropped to 17th position in the standings, while his teammate Ritomo Miyata went on to win the Sprint in Madrid.
As it stands, Herta will not score any Super License points based on his current position in the drivers’ championship, but he has been gathering points through his FP1 outings for Cadillac so far this season, although his latest appearance at Monza was ended prematurely due to a car reliability issue.
