SCCA: Phillips named technical delegate for F4 U.S.
Former IndyCar vice president of technology Will Phillips (ABOVE) has been hired by SCCA Pro Racing as technical delegate for the Formula 4 United States Championship powered by Honda, which will hold its first race next month.
The move reunites Phillips, who left IndyCar in March, with SCCA Pro Racing president and CEO Derrick Walker (above, left), to whom he reported in helping to regulate rules, race control, competition and safety. In his new role, Phillips will ensure compliance and enforce all Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) regulations for the F4 U.S. Championship, which will debut at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut on May 27.
"Will Phillips is a great addition to our F4 team," Walker said. "His experience and knowledge is just what we need as we embark on our first season of the F4 United States Championship."
Phillips will work with race director Chip Robinson and operations manager Casey Carden.
Phillips' past roles including engineering director for 2010 LMP championship-winning Patron Highcroft Racing in the American Le Mans Series and serving as a race engineer with IndyCar drivers Danny Sullivan, Scott Sharp, Alex Tagliani and Ryan Hunter-Reay.
"I'm delighted to support Derrick and this series," Phillips said. "I look forward to seeing the successful introduction of Formula 4 in the United States."
He also was responsible for the design, development and delivery of the Reynard 02S sports car.
The F4 series will run 15 races at five classic tracks beginning in May and concluding at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida, in October.
