INDYCAR: Dixon tops Barber test

The entire Verizon IndyCar Series grid,

barring Will Power

, took part in a one-day test at Barber Motorsports Park on Tuesday, and based on the unofficial times, Chevy teams are looking strong in road course trim.

Moving north from last weekend's season opener on the streets of St. Petersburg, IndyCar drivers took to the winding Alabama circuit, which hosts the fourth championship round, where 20 cars turned laps around the 2.38-mile facility.

It's believed the fastest laps produced by Scott Dixon (Chevy) and Jack Hawksworth (Honda) were aided by an extra 60 hp from the push-to-pass button; the separation between the best from both brands was approximately 0.4s.

Dale Coyne Racing's Conor Daly spent a portion of the day acclimating himself to the track and the speed produced by his Honda-powered Dallara DW12, and says that by the afternoon, significant progress was made.

"It was a difficult first half of the day; I hadn't driven there since 2011, and these cars are really, really fast there," Daly told RACER. "I had a few things to work on driving-wise, and we did a lot of investigating on what works for our car at Barber.

"It wasn't until the end of the day on the final set of tires where we though we got into the window, within a few tenths of everyone. It's all very close. There's a lot to pick up there and learn, and an Indy car is really impressive to drive at that place."

Daly also says the gains made in working with Honda's heavily-revised aero kit should help when the series returns to Barber on April 24.

"We as the Honda group have a lot of work to do, but some of what we found in the afternoon to get going in the right direction came from learning the aero kit," he said. "I think it was all positive."
