'Frustrated' atmosphere at McLaren - Turvey
Oliver Turvey has urged McLaren to remain positive as its struggles with Honda continue but admits there is a "frustrated" atmosphere within the team.
was labeled as "a disaster" by Honda's Yusuke Hasegawa
due to recurring MGU-H issues, McLaren and Honda were hoping to use the post-race test to iron out some of the difficulties faced. However, a water leak from the ERS was discovered after the installation laps on Tuesday and saw the team confined to the garage for more than eight hours.Test and development driver Turvey was in the car to improve the correlation between track and simulator, and admitted it is tough for the team to remain optimistic during the ongoing struggles.
"I think at the minute, obviously everyone's frustrated and it's not where we want the team to be," Turvey (pictured) said when asked by RACER what the atmosphere is like. "But this is my eighth season with the team as a test driver so I've been with the team for a long time. I think everyone is working as hard as ever to try and get us back to winning ways and I think everyone's doing everything they can. Everyone has got to work together and keep positive and keep moving forwards, really."
While Turvey managed a total of 17 laps throughout the nine hours of track time, he still believes his late burst of laps will prove beneficial to his work back in the simulator.
"Obviously coming here the main thing was to try and get a feeling for the car and to go back into the simulator and try and develop the car. Obviously we didn't get as many laps as we wanted and it was quite a frustrating day in that sense. But for me it has been two years since I last drove the car, so it was great to get back out in a Formula 1 car and to test again with McLaren-Honda.
"I think at the end there I got a few laps in the last two runs and was able to get a reasonable feeling for the car. So I think we achieved something out of that today and I can go back to the factory and work with the team and hopefully get the simulator correlated, which will help us for the rest of the year."
With RACER understanding Jenson Button turned down the chance to test on Tuesday morning in Bahrain in favor of only using the simulator to prepare for his Monaco Grand Prix appearance, Turvey added: "I think it's a pretty good tool and I think we'll have a good tool for him to prepare for Monaco."
