F1: French GP to return in 2018

The French Grand Prix's decade-long absence from the Formula 1 calendar will end in 2018 with a race at the Paul Ricard circuit.

Reports of an imminent deal for the return of the world's oldest grand prix

first surfaced late last week

, and were confirmed by Christian Estrosi, President of the Regional Council of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, on Monday.

The venue, also known as Le Castellet, last hosted a grand prix in 1990, when Alain Prost won for Ferrari, but was visited by modern cars in January of this year when Ferrari and McLaren ran 2015-spec equipment for a Pirelli wet weather tire test.

After 1990 the French GP moved to Magny-Cours, where it remained until the race disappeared from the calendar in 2008.
