WEC: Williamson to finish season with Strakka

Former GP3 driver Lewis Williamson will complete the World Endurance Championship season with the Strakka Racing LMP2 squad.

The 26-year-old Briton made his race debut in the team's Gibson-Nissan 015S at last month's Nurburgring round and will now contest the remaining five races alongside Jonny Kane and Nick Leventis. Williamson, who has been driving Strakka's entry in the Renault Sport Trophy for the RS01 one-make racer this year, has replaced team stalwart Danny Watts in the line-up.

"Lewis' fine performance left us with a difficult decision for the rest of the season," Strakka team principal Dan Walmsley said. "Before Nurburgring, Lewis had done no testing and had driven the car for just six laps in Bahrain [at the WEC rookie test] last year. That underlined his potential and we'd like to see more of him as plans evolve for 2017."

Williamson described his deal for the rest of the season as "amazing" and said it had "still not sunken in that I'll be in the car again."

Walmsley stressed that Watts would remain part of the team and thanked him for his "efforts on track, as well as off track to accommodate the changes."

Strakka has opted against returning to the Renault series this season.
