First crop of 2015 Tire Rack Solo Nationals champs crowned
With the second day of competition completed at the 43rd annual Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships Presented by Garmin VIRB, 38 drivers make up the latest class of Solo National Champions. Drivers in each class switched to the opposite of two courses, which they had not already run, at Lincoln Airpark to decide which driver would ultimately come away with the title.

While Tuesday's on-course action was impacted by mother nature, the opposite was true on Wednesday. Sunny skies predominated the morning hours, while clouds rolled in later in the day to shade the entire competition site. Here is a breakdown of what happened on both courses:West Course
During Wednesday's opening heat, much of the attention was paid to the battle in F Street. Bryan Heitkotter earned his sixth National Championship jacket, but had to come from behind to do it. Extremely wet conditions during Tuesday's runs favored those drivers later in the queue, including Tuesday leader Matthew Ales. With Wednesday's perfectly dry conditions on the more technical of the two courses, Heitkotter flashed his skills by laying down a second lap that was 1.8 seconds clear of the field, and built off of that momentum on his final run of the event. Ales tried to answer on his final run, but took out a cone on a lap that would have been the only one in the same zip code as Heitkotter's.Tamra Hunt conquered C Street Prepared in her first trip to the event. Hunt was the day-one leader and was able to keep the momentum rolling through Wednesday's three runs, cruising to a 3.251-second win over the rest of the field. In Heat Two, Jason Frank came away the Street Touring Sport winner after finishing Tuesday's runs more than 0.3-second behind Andrew Canak. During Wednesday's runs, Frank pulled out the big guns on his second lap by breaking into the 63-second range. That was something no other driver in the class would be able to duplicate. On his third run of Wednesday, Canak had the raw time to stay at the top of the order but took out three cones and incurred the resulting penalty. That gave the nod to Frank by 0.117-second in the 63-car class. As part of Heat Three, E Street shaped up to be a battleground class following Tuesday runs. Michael Ron was able to bump Andrew Pallotta from the top spot on his last run on Tuesday; however it would be Pallotta who got the final word. The reigning Solo Driver of the Year started with the best raw time on Wednesday, but had to tack on a two-second cone penalty. Pallotta backed off on this remaining two runs, but had enough to win the title. Pallotta finished his Championship Run 0.559-second ahead of Chris Bailey, while Michael Ron came home third. In Heat Four, Thomas Berry took home a narrow 0.115-second A Street Prepared win over Aaron Miller. Berry put down three clean runs, with the best on his second run. Meanwhile, Miller took out a total of five combined cones on his first two runs. That forced Miller to dial his pace back to make sure he registered a representative time. When the final tally was made, Berry was the winner. On the first day of competition in Heat Five, Christina Peterson may not have had a National Championship on her mind following her first-run DNF. However, she bounced back from the early misstep to fend off her co-driver Jennifer Bedell. The title is Peterson's second of her career after not running in last year's event. Bedell did run a faster time than that of Peterson on Wednesday, but it left her just 0.096-second short of claiming the title.East Course
Following a six-year break from Nationals, Karen Kolk came back to the world's largest motorsports competition and captured her second national title during Wednesday's Heat One. Aside from being away from this level of autocross competition, Kolk notched the win by beating Laura Campbell – a 2014 National Champion. Kolk wasn't the fastest on the East Course, which saw all but two drivers in the class take at least one cone penalty, but had built enough of a cushion after day one to win.Heat Two provided a great example of the close finishes often seen at the Tire Rack SCCA National Championships. In Super Street Modified, Jake Namer came from behind to win the title by a mere 0.069-second over Tuesday leader Matthew Glagola. After the razor close finish, Namer could not put into words the emotional rollercoaster he had just endured to come out the other end as the victor. Ending Tuesday in fourth, Namer put down a screaming second run that cleared his closest competition by 0.7-second and was able to finish as the only driver in the class to break the 50-second barrier. Namer earned his first National Championship jacket, after finishing 2014 as the runner up.In Heat Three, Mary Pozzi was the leader at the end of both days of competition in CAM-Traditional, but that does not tell the whole story. Pozzi and Indy 500 Champion Al Unser, Jr. swapped the class lead back and forth during both days of racing. In the end, it was Pozzi who came out on top after logging the best time of the day on her third run. She finished 0.653-second ahead of one of the most well-known racecar drivers born in the United States.Greg Reno wrapped up his fourth consecutive title in H Street. Reno held the day-one lead over the always-dangerous Darren Seltzer and did what was needed to defend his title. Reno was fast out of the box on the flowing East Course, and slowly worked down to his class-leading lap of 58.539 seconds. That was good enough to put him 0.232-second ahead of Seltzer at the end of the competition. In Heat Four, Fred Zust tallied his seventh X Prepared title in 10 years. As the two-time defending title winner, Zust was the odds-on favorite, but Andrew McKee attempted to make things a little more interesting. McKee threw down an impressive second run, which was quicker than Zust's best time on the course, but the overnight deficit would prove too much for McKee to overcome.Grant Reeve, Sam Strano and Matthew Braun were at war during Wednesday's final heat. The top three finishers in Super Street R were covered by 0.084-second. Reeve nailed his pressure-filled last run after taking down a total of three cones during his first two runs. While both Strano and Braun has clean and fast runs in the bank, Reeve put down the run quick enough to earn him his first National Championship by just 0.004-second.Thursday and Friday brings two more days of competition from the Lincoln Airpark in Lincoln, Neb., with another set of competitors on tap for an additional round of National Championships. To find additional information on the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships Presented by Garmin VIRB, including full results and links to live audio and video, visit SCCA.com/SoloNats.LINCOLN, Neb. – The National Champion in each of the 32 classes (plus five supplemental classes) competing on Tuesday and Wednesday in the 43rd Tire Rack® SCCA Solo National Championships presented by Garmin VIRB at the Lincoln Airpark with class, winning driver, hometown, car, and total number of National Championships.B Street: Andrew Smedegard, Stevens Point, Wis., first National Championship, second class win at Nationals.B Street Ladies: Barbara Leroy-Boehme, San Diego, Calif., second consecutive BSL National Championship, fifth overall.E Street: Andrew Pallotta, Middleburg Heights, Ohio, third National Championship.E Street Ladies: Christina Peterson, Hillsborough, N.C., second National Championship.F Street: Bryan Heitkotter, Fresno, Calif., sixth National Championship.F Street Ladies: Teddie Alexandrova, Fresno, Calif., first National Championship, second class win at Nationals.H Street: Greg Reno, Lawrence, Kan., fourth consecutive National Championship, fourth overall.H Street Ladies: Holly Schwedler, Lakewood, Ohio, second consecutive HSL National Championship, second overall.Super Street R: Grant Reeve, Sturbridge, Mass., first National Championship.Super Street R Ladies: Shelly Monfort, Saratoga, Calif., seventh consecutive National Championship, seventh overall.Street Touring Sport: Jason Frank, Mount Pleasant, Wis., third National Championship.Street Touring Sport Ladies: Nicole Wong, Moorpark, Calif., fifth consecutive National Championship, fifth overall.Super Street Prepared: Joe Tharp, State Center, Iowa, third National Championship.Super Street Prepared Ladies: Donna Littlejohn, Columbia, S.C., second National Championship.A Street Prepared: Thomas Berry, Alta Loma, Calif., seventh National Championship.A Street Prepared Ladies: Caitlin Snell, Monroe, Wash., first National Championship.B Street Prepared: Steve O'Blenes, Garden Grove, Calif., fifth National Championship.B Street Prepared Ladies: Jodi Fordahl, Bremerton, Wash., 13th National Championship.C Street Prepared: Billy Davis, New Haven, Conn., second consecutive CSP National Championship, second overall.C Street Prepared Ladies: Tamra Hunt, Shelton, Conn., first National Championship.D Street Prepared: Doug Rowse, Phoenix, Ariz., second consecutive DSP National Championship, fourth overall.E Street Prepared: Brian Peters, Litchfield Park, Ariz., fourth consecutive National Championship, sixth overall.E Street Prepared Ladies: Carol Kolk, White Lake, Mich., second National Championship.Super Street Modified: Jake Namer, Brooklyn, N.Y., first National Championship.*Super Street Modified Ladies: Tara Johns, Murfreesboro, Tenn., fourth Nationals win.Street Modified FWD: Brian Kuehl, Durham, N.H., first National Championship.Street Modified FWD Ladies: Ginette Jordan, Terrell, N.C., 12th National Championship.A Modified: KJ Christopher, Redondo Beach, Calif., first National Championship.F Modified: Jason Hobbs, Saint Michael, Minn., first National Championship.F Modified Ladies: Michelle Quinn, Trinity, Fla., second consecutive FML National Championship, fifth career championship.D Prepared: Christopher Dorsey, Littleton, Colo., fifth consecutive EP National Championship, sixth National Championship.E Prepared: Tim Smith, Atlanta, Ga., second National Championship.X Prepared: Fred Zust, Tempe, Ariz., third consecutive XP National Championship, seventh overall.*CAM-Traditional: Mary Pozzi, Salinas, Calif., second Nationals win.*CAM-Sport: Scott Fraser, San Jose, Calif., fouth Nationals win.*CAM-Contemporary: Christopher Carmenini, New York, N.Y., first Nationals win.*Formula SAE: Wyatt Langston, Double Oak, Texas, first Nationals win.Image: Brian Peters cruises around the Tire Rack Solo Nationals course at the Lincoln (Neb.)
