Gidley sweeps GT America at Road America

Memo Gidley once again emerged as the driver to beat as the GT America powered by AWS field wrapped up its Road America slate, solidifying yet another weekend sweep this season and further extending his championship lead. In the remaining classes, Lawrence Tomlinson, David Lecko, and Craig Lumsden also put in strong performances of their own to complete the doubleheader event, 

SRO3 Class 

Tony Davis got away cleanly in his No. 04 HP-TECH Motorsport Ferrari 296 GT3 from the overall pole position and initially held onto the lead, but Memo Gidley was determined to repeat his Race 1 performance.

After just a couple of laps, Gidley found his opportunity and moved into the lead on board his No. 56 Ski Autosports Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVOII, taking control of the race and immediately setting about building a gap over the rest of the SRO3 field.

While Gidley began to stretch his advantage at the front, the battle behind him was anything but settled.

Davis found himself locked in a three-way fight for second with Ross Chouest in the No. 50 Chouest Povoledo Racing Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R and Scott Blind in the No. 45 Ruckus Racing Porsche 911 GT3-R (992) EVO. Lap after lap, Chouest continued to apply pressure on Davis, searching for an opportunity to make his move while Blind remained close enough to capitalize on any mistake.

After several laps of chasing, Chouest finally found the opening he had been waiting for with just over four minutes remaining. He made his move for second and successfully moved ahead of Davis, putting himself into position for another SRO3 podium.

Davis dropped to third but immediately had to turn his attention to his mirrors, with Blind closing in and applying pressure for the final podium position. Despite the late challenge, Davis held firm through the closing laps to secure third.

Up front, there was no catching Gidley. The result completed a perfect weekend for Gidley, who swept both SRO3 races at Road America. Chouest added another podium to his season tally with a hard-earned second-place finish, while Davis held on for third after a race-long fight.

“ It's unbelievable,” Memo Gidley exclaimed at the podium celebrations. “For me, the best situation I can be in is to be racing for the best people. Ken, Melissa and everybody from Ski Autosports, they're just the A team. They're number one. Then we’ve also got the Rowdy Audi, which as we know, is an awesome car. It’s just a pleasure to be out here at Road America. I've been here many years and it’s always fun to be back and see the fans.”

GT2 & Cup Class

Lawrence Tomlinson once again proved that his No. 62 Team LNT Ginetta G56 GT2 entry had no intention of staying out of the overall fight. The Ginetta's straight-line speed allowed Tomlinson to mix it up with the SRO3 competitors throughout the race, producing several wheel-to-wheel battles as he used the car's strengths to challenge for positions in the overall running.

Meanwhile, David Lecko enjoyed another solid run in the Cup class in his No. 89 RacingSupport Ginetta GTP8, continuing his progress through his full-season GT America campaign.

GT4 Class

Craig Lumsden capped off the Road America weekend with another victory in the GT4 class. Continuing his full-season campaign in the No. 610 Colorado Motorsport with Flying Lizard BMW M4 GT4 (G82) EVO, Lumsden put together another strong performance to take the GT4 win and add to his season tally. With another race under his belt, Lumsden continues to build experience and momentum as the GT America season heads into its final stretch. Barber Motorsports Park is next on Sept. 25-27.
