SCCA: Soggy start to second day of Majors action at Texas World Speedway
On Sunday, competitors awoke to extremely wet conditions caused by overnight rain storms. The same weather system caused flash floods in some parts of central Texas, but the conditions for Round Six of the SCCA U.S. Majors Tour Mid-States Conference at Texas World Speedway were only enough to force drivers to change their plan of attack on track.
Group one, Spec Miata, had to deal with the most challenging conditions as the track was extremely slilck. When race group two took to the track, a dry line was beginning to form at many places on the 15-turn, 2.9-mile circuit, while many other parts of the course still remained treacherous. Fortunately, the forecasted rain that was supposed to come later on Sunday never did.
The event also concluded the final chapter of SCCA national-level competition at Texas World Speedway. Barring any changes, the speedway is due to close at the end of the year. The land is set to be used for residential and commercial development.
Michael Ross, of Frisco, Texas, shortened Spec Miata race in his No. 72 X-Factor Racing/TPR Consulting MPR Co Mazda Miata. The red flag came out as a result of a collision between William Keeling and Lee Thomas. After both drivers were assessed by emergency personnel at the track, Keeling opted to seek further medical care, as a precaution, while Thomas returned to the paddock.
In the Spec Racer Ford Gen3 battle Gary Glanger, of Dallas, utilized some late race heroics to seal the class win on Sunday. As the laps began to tick down in the 14-lap feature, Glanger was in the tire tracks of then leader Kevin Bosien. However, Glanger made the pass for position stick and drove his No. 18 SRFG3 to the win. The win also allowed Glanger to complete the weekend sweep.
Touring 3 featured another close battle for the lead between eventual race winner Bob Schader, of Lafayette, Colo., and Jason Ott. Schader, in his No. 8 Nissan 350Z, once again did what he needed to do to keep Ott behind him and take the win.
Also completing the sweep in a hotly-contested Formula F battle was Wesley Cunningham, of Houston, in his No. 33 Brad Pierce Autosport/Over Fifty Motorsports Swift DB-6. The race, which was called one lap early as a result of track cleanup, was a close one between Cunningham and Megan Sauce before the race-ending yellow flag was displayed.
Jack Walbran, of St. Louis, Mo., exceeded his weekend expectations by leaving Texas with a pair of wins. Coming into the event, Walbran said he had hoped to pilot his No. 67 Mitchell Racing Services Scorpion F500 to one win in order to stay in contention for the Mid-States Conference title. Now with a pair of wins, Walbran said he feels pretty confident about the rest of the season.
