Kyalami redevelopment announced
Former Formula 1 venue Kyalami has revealed detailed plans of an FIA-approved upgrade to the South African circuit, including changes to its layout.
The ex-South African Grand Prix venue, the future of which was safeguarded following an auction last July, will also be resurfaced, while a new pit building and spectator areas will be built.
The changes will return Kyalami to an FIA Grade 2 circuit, allowing it to host any type of racing except for Formula 1 or F1 testing.
The main changes to the layout are at the start of the lap, with the previous right-left sweepers replaced by a kink leading into a much tighter Turn 2 and 3 at the end of a start/finish straight that will be extended to almost 900m.
The circuit will also be altered at Turn 13 [re-named "The Crocodiles"], which will be widened and changed in profile.
Along with building a new pit complex, the old pit buildings will be restored and kept on as a secondary facility.
Circuit bosses stated that resurfacing the track to "international specifications" is a priority, as the current surface has been in place since the early 1990s, when the track last hosted F1.
FIA safety delegate Charlie Whiting paid Kyalami a visit to inspect the plans, and with their subsequent blessing by the FIA, the track was closed on May 12 to allow work to progress. It is expected the circuit will re-open in either August or September this year.
