Newgarden’s Indy 500 charge ends with restart crash

Josef Newgarden’s incredible drive from 23rd to fourth at the Indianapolis 500 came to an end with a solo spin and hard crash into the Turn 4 wall on the lap 126 restart.

The two-time Indy winner was on an epic charge in the No. 2 Chevy and was preparing to chase down Scott Dixon for third as the field was preparing to return to green after spending many laps under caution due to a brief bout of rain in Turn 4.

Teammate and race leader David Malukas, Alex Palou, and Dixon navigated the corner while commencing the restart without issue, but Newgarden, who turned down and placed his left-front tire well below the white line in the corner, lost the rear of the car and spun. The front of the car smashed into the SAFER barrier, but the damage was considerable and the two-time IndyCar champion walked to the ambulance after taking a few minutes to gather himself.

Newgarden saw a promising 2025 Indy 500 come to an early end when engine problems intervened.

With the early conclusion to his race, Newgarden was classified 28th.

RACER awaits an update on Newgarden's condition.
