Mekies promises ‘great results’ after Red Bull promotion
New Red Bull team principal and CEO Laurent Mekies says he feels honored by his promotion from Racing Bulls in place of Christian Horner, and that the team will achieve “great results” in future.
Horner was removed from his position this week, with the 51-year-old having led Red Bull throughout its time as a Formula 1 constructor, from its first race in 2005. A statement said Horner was “released from his operational duties” and Red Bull has turned to Mekies to replace him in both roles.
The Frenchman steps up from the team principal role at Racing Bulls, and says he is trading one special opportunity for another.

“Looking to the future, I am excited to be taking on the role of CEO and team principal of Oracle Red Bull Racing, one of the most successful and dynamic teams in the sport. It’s an honor to be part of this group of brilliant people that embody the Red Bull spirit.
“Together we will achieve great results, building on the incredible legacy left by Christian Horner during his two decades in charge.”
Mekies has previously worked as deputy team principal at Ferrari as well as deputy race director at the FIA, but Racing Bulls was his first team principal position and he believes the team is well set up for future success.
“A very big thank you from the bottom of my heart for the amazing support we got from you in this last year and a half of the adventure with Visa Cash App Racing Bulls,” he said in a video message. “I don’t really want to feel that I’m leaving – I stay in the family and go across the road – but more importantly I know the team will be in fantastic hands with Peter, with Alan, with everyone else that have made this team special.”
There were also further thanks for the outgoing Horner on social media, with Red Bull carrying a short comment from long-time advisor Helmut Marko.
“Christian and I have worked together very successfully for over 20 years – both in Formula 1 and in Formula 3000,” Marko said. “I would like to sincerely thank Christian for that. During this time, we were able to celebrate an incredible number of outstanding achievements. We helped developed two world drivers’ champions and several grand prix winners. That has always been – and still is – the Red Bull way.
“As for the current sporting situation: there are still 12 races to go, and we will continue to fight for the drivers’ championship as long as it’s mathematically possible.”
Max Verstappen also posted a message, adding: “From my first race win, to four world championships, we have shared incredible successes. Winning memorable races and breaking countless records. Thank you for everything, Christian!”
