Schatz edges Larson at Knoxville Nationals
Donnie Schatz held off a charging Kyle Larson on Saturday night to earn his 10th Knoxville Nationals' title and $150,000 first prize.
Getting a special dispensation to drive a sprint car the night before the NASCAR show at Michigan, Larson put on quite a show. He started ninth but had charged to third by Lap 24 and then took over second spot on Lap 26.
From there the 25-year-old Californian stalked Schatz and finished a few car lengths behind the perennial World of Outlaws king – banging off the wall on the white flag lap and then trying a slide job on the last corner that came up short.
Starting from the pole, Schatz quickly lost the top spot to David Gravel, who moved out to a comfortable advantage before losing an engine on Lap 22.
That left Schatz in charge and that's where he stayed as he and Larson negotiated traffic on the fast, half-mile dirt track.
