Paul McCartney adds concert during Mexican GP
Sir Paul McCartney has joined the line-up for the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix, adding an extra date to his "One on One" world tour to incorporate the race weekend festivities into his global schedule.
The former Beatle (pictured at the Abu Dhabi GP in 2011) will play Mexico's 46,000-seat national football stadium Estadio Azteca on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 28th as part of the Mexican Grand Prix's F1 ESTA.
McCartney's One on One Tour is his 14th as a solo artist and his appearance as part of the F1 ESTA will mark his fifth visit to Mexico and his 11th performance in the country. Fittingly his very first concerts in Mexico back in 1993 took place in Mexico City at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, home of the Formula 1 Gran Premio de Mexico.
Formula 1 has enjoyed a successful return to Mexico City with its 2015 and 2016 races winning awards for best promotion. Race organizers CIE confirmed they have been working "tirelessly to continue to raise the bar and produce another world class event for 2017. Adding one of the world's most recognisable performers and composers to the weekend schedule is another way of encouraging visitors and fans to go far beyond the race and explore everything Mexico City has to offer."
As the concert will not be held within the track premises and is additional entertainment to that of the race, tickets will be sold separately. Prices start at just $24 and will be available starting July 6th (11:00 a.m. Mexico City time).
McCartney's visit coincides with the 50th anniversary and re-issue of The Beatles' iconic Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album and its return to the top of the charts for the first time since its original release.
McCartney is one of the most prolific performers in the world, having now been on tour almost non-stop since he returned to playing live shows, after a decade's hiatus, in 2002. His concerts have built a mighty reputation, regularly showcasing over 30 songs from his half a century of songwriting and featuring a wide array of music from the over 40 albums he has released with The Beatles, Wings, Fireman and as a solo artist and composer.
