TV Ratings: Mexico, Martinsville
Formula 1 and NASCAR continued to go head to head on TV last Sunday, with the Mexican Grand Prix on NBC airing opposite the Chase for the Sprint Cup race from Martinsville on NBCSN. Despite the cable network handicap, NASCAR again came out comfortably ahead. However, it did so despite a significant drop over last year's numbers while F1's were up, if only slightly, over 2015.
Martinsville's Goody's Fast Relief 500 scored a 1.6 overnight rating on NBCSN, averaging 2.7 million viewers. That's down from a 2.0/3.4m average last year, also on NBCSN.
F1's Mexican GP scored a 0.53 overnight rating on NBC, good for an average of 805,000 viewers. That's up from a 0.48/722,000 for the same race last year, also on NBC.
The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race from Martinsville scored a 0.36, and averaged 548,000 viewers on FOX Sports 1. That was a near match for last year's numbers for this race, which had a 0.40/588,000.
The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series again featured live coverage from Las Vegas, scoring a 0.24/366,000 average for Sunday afternoon's finals from Las Vegas on FS1. Interestingly, that is almost identical to the 0.25/368,000 average for last year's Vegas finals on ESPN2, which were delayed to prime time on the East Coast.
