F3: Ilott stripped of Hockenheim podium

Callum Ilott has been excluded from third place in

Race 2 of the Formula 3 European Championship finale at Hockenheim

.

The Briton's Van Amersfoort Racing Dallara-Mercedes failed to yield the required 1kg of fuel for its post-race sample at scrutineering. Team boss Frits van Amersfoort told Autosport that the sample fell just 20g short.

Ilott's early retirement from the first race meant that the team had less information to go on for its calculation of the fuel required.

The second race also ran a lap longer in its 33-minutes-plus-one-lap duration because of the high speed in the cool early-evening conditions.

"It was just a mistake," said van Amersfoort. "We even filled the car a bit more than usual. It is one of the first times I've ever had a car excluded for a 'technical' infringement, but rules are rules."

The exclusion relegates Ilott from a close fight with Nick Cassidy and newly crowned rookie champion Joel Eriksson for fourth in the overall championship to a distant sixth before the final race, which he will start from third on the grid.
