SCCA: Walker resigns as Pro Racing president

SCCA Pro Racing president Derrick Walker announced his resignation Wednesday from the Sports Car Club of America's for-profit subsidiary. He will remain until a replacement is found.

Walker came on board last fall, tasked with getting the F4 United States Championship powered by Honda off the ground for its American debut, which took place in early July at Mid-Ohio. He also oversaw the sanctioning of Pirelli World Challenge, Trans-Am Series, the Battery Tender Global Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich Tires and the Atlantic, F2000 and F1600 championship series.

"I have enjoyed my time with the SCCA Pro Racing, and in particular the launch of the F4 Championship here in the United States," Walker said in a statement. "After two successful race event weekends, it's clear that the series has a great deal of potential. As for my future, I fully intend to continue on in racing. "

"SCCA Pro Racing is moving rapidly to fill the open president's position," SCCA said in a statement.

Walker resigned from his post as IndyCar's president of competition and operations in August 2015, having worked past his original two-year deal. He suffered the consequences of aero kit cost criticism, the quick decision to use race-day trim for Indy 500 qualifying after several cars went airborne in the month of May, budget cuts and dissatisfaction with decisions by race control.

Walker's departure comes a week after SCCA president and CEO Lisa Noble resigned to pursue other challenges.

As for his next steps, the 71-year-old open-wheel veteran

told RACER's Robin Miller

that he's not opposed to bringing back Walker Racing, "but, obviously, that requires finding the money, which is not any easier.

"I figure I've got five years left with my marbles, although some may suggest that's a stretch, and then it's probably going to be all downhill so I better make the most of it," he said with a laugh. "Walker Racing has been around for 25 years and it would be great to get back into the IndyCar wars. IndyCar will always be my main passion.

"It's the best racing on the planet and I'd like to be part of it again, especially with those aero kits."
