A stupendous machine with awe-inspiring performance and uncompromised styling straight from the F1 paddock, this 2003 Ferrari Enzo embodies the ultimate in technology and speed in any Ferrari produced to its time. Its predecessors, the 288 GTO, the F40 and then the F50, all set new standards in the heady world of extreme sports cars; the Enzo did all that and more, showcasing Formula 1 practice and technology like no other car before it.
Pininfarina design chief Lorenzo Ramaciotti was responsible for the car's overall exterior shape and wind tunnel sculpting, describing the finished product as a quantum leap rivalling that of the 250 SWB Berlinetta and the Dino. "The shape was determined by the car's high performance potential rather than aesthetics," he said, allowing that the wind tunnel results dictated the final design, which included careful under body sculpting to maximize downforce while eliminating any add-on spoilers. The approach is most strongly evidenced in the Enzo's front end, the center section of which slopes forward to imitate the F1's nose with its angled uprights and lower extensions.
Massive air intakes flank the cockpit behind gullwing doors inspired by the 512 endurance racers of yore, feeding the all-new, lightweight 6.0L V-12 engine beneath the tapering roof. Using the 1995 F1 car's sophisticated variable-length induction, 4 valves per cylinder and Ferrari's first constantly variable exhaust-valve timing system, it drives 660 HP through a 6-speed paddle-shift manual transmission with limited slip differential to launch the Enzo to 60 MPH in 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 218.
