F1: Veteran manager Cregan joins Vegas effort

Veteran racing manager Richard Cregan, who has organized races in Russia and Abu Dhabi, has joined the organizers of the proposed Las Vegas venture, Forbes reports.

The former senior manager for Toyota F1 has most recently been a consultant for the Russian Grand Prix, whose inaugural race drew 166,000 people and was awarded the 2014 Race Promoters' Trophy. He also was part of the original team that developed the track and team behind the Yas Marina Circuit and execution of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Forbes reports Cregan's team is responsible for more than 400 hundred additional events including forums, conferences and major automobile events.

Earlier in the weekend, event organizer Farid Shidfar of P2M Motorsports told the BBC that a Beijing-based conglomerate

has "an agreement in principle"

to commit £100m ($143 million) for the race to get the green light, but the state of Nevada needed to provide additional support.

Cregan's role "will be the management of the project with Farid's team to produce a magic result for F1 and Las Vegas," he told Forbes.

"Can you imagine the spectacle of F1 in Las Vegas?" he said. "The combination of both a F1 street race and the Vegas strip would deliver a show like nothing else imaginable. We have been working on this project for three years now with Farid and his team and Im sure we will have an announcement very soon."

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has voiced support for a race on the Las Vegas Strip, both to F1 and to Shidfar. Pressing issues include whether a track layout would disrupt the Strip and a financial commitment by the state. Sandoval commissioned a study for economic diversification last year that showed an F1 race would bring in international visitors and serve as a boost to the Las Vegas economy.
