PWC: Update on injured drivers expected soon - Gill
News has been heavily controlled in the wake of the serious crash involving Pirelli World Challenge drivers Andrew Palmer and Jorge De La Torre at Lime Rock Park on Saturday, but an update is expected to arrive in the next 24 hours, according to series CEO Greg Gill.
"We are waiting for a statement from Andrew Palmer's family," Gill told RACER. "He is in the hospital being treated as we reported last weekend, and the same is true for Jorge De la Torre. We expect an update either tonight or in the morning."
The two came together in Turn 1 during the morning warm-up session, where Palmer cleared the barriers in a clash that required extensive efforts to extricate both young talents. In the absence of detailed reports, rumors have circulated about the severity of the injuries Palmer and De La Torre incurred, and it's believed further clarification on the recovery involved for the pair could be provided in the forthcoming update.
Gill expressed his appreciation for all those who've reached out since Saturday and continue to keep both drivers in their thoughts.
"I want to personally thank everyone who has expressed their support, and the tremendous outpouring of care and prayers since the weekend for both drivers," he said. "One of the wonderful things about motorsport is how people band together and support each other, and that's exactly what we've seen during this time."
Pirelli World Challenge released a statement Tuesday night saying there was no additional information at this time:
"As a follow up to the releases regarding the GT warm-up accident in Saturday's Pirelli World Challenge race at Lime Rock Park, the Series wants to thank our teams, drivers and fans for the tremendous outpouring of support for Andrew Palmer and Jorge De La Torre.
"Both drivers continue to receive treatment for their injuries at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Conn. Hartford Hospital has not released further information at this time. The Series will forward any detailed update on the drivers when received from a Hartford Hospital spokesperson. We thank everyone for respecting the families right to privacy as they concentrate on Andrew and Jorge's hospitalization."
This story has been updated since initial publication to include a statement from Pirelli World Challenge.
