INDY 500: Montoya first to crash
Defending Indy 500 winner Juan Montoya's bid to score a repeat victory ended against the Turn 2 wall on lap 63. The two-time Indy winner was the first car to crash during the centennial event as his No. 2 Team Penske Chevy understeered before gaining traction and sending the back of the his car around where he spun and hit the exit barrier.
"It just got loose," Montoya said. "People do a lot of dumb things on a restart and we were just being careful, trying to make up some ground. The car was really good and it felt OK.
"I went into Two and got a big push and I got out of the gas and it just came around. We were coming through the field, the car felt pretty good, and it just stepped out."
The notoriously curt Colombian was rather nonplussed after being released from the infield care center, summarizing the crash that resulted in an abbreviated Indy 500 with: "It just happened."
