WEC: No 'rush' on GTE world championship
The status of the GT drivers' and manufacturers' titles is unlikely to be upgraded for next year's World Endurance Championship.
The manufacturers competing in GTE, who will be joined in 2016 by Ford, have lobbied for full world championship status for what are currently known as the World Endurance Cups for GT drivers and manufacturers. But FIA endurance commission president Lindsay Owen-Jones said the plans remain a "work in progress" and hinted that any change would not happen in time for next year's WEC.
"The idea is progressing, but slowly," he said. "The FIA is right in that it won't give out full world championships like biscuits or sweets. I respect that and it is important that we build something strong and don't rush into it."
Full world championship status is only given to the overall drivers' title, toward which all prototype drivers can score points, and the LMP1 manufacturers' prize. The LMP1 privateer, LMP2 and GTE Am champions are awarded World Endurance Trophies.
