MOTOGP: Lorenzo says 'trusting instincts' key to title

Jorge Lorenzo says a change of mindset to simply 'trust his instincts' was a key to turning his slow start to the 2015 MotoGP season into a third title.

Lorenzo was 29 points down on Yamaha teammate Valentino Rossi after three races, but recorded his first win of the season in the fourth grand prix at Jerez. It started a run of four-straight victories and he eventually overhauled year-long leader Rossi by winning the Valencia finale.

"In Qatar, the thing happened with the helmet where I lost vision in the last laps," he said in an interview on the series' website. "In Austin I was weak and I was taking antibiotics. In Argentina we weren't fast enough all weekend and also we decided to go with the softer tire... that wasn't the right decision, which was the hard tire.

"So I lost 29 points from the leader of the championship, and I knew I needed to react soon. So in Jerez I just said, 'OK Jorge, just go there and ride in the best way possible without thinking, just trusting your instinct,' and that's what I did. It worked well and this was the beginning of a very good recovery in the next few races."

Lorenzo admitted that snatching the title from Rossi at the final hurdle was "special."

"To have a more emotional, or more dramatic end to the championship was impossible," he said. "I never cried on the bike, in all my life, but this time was special because I knew how many sacrifices and how much I suffered to get it done.

"[With] every hour that passed I realised that it had been a great championship, a very hard championship, one that was very hard to get and finally we did it. Sometimes it seemed almost impossible, but we never gave up and we tried everything and finally the effort was worth it."
