IndyCar: Wilson auction nears $200K mark after 4 days of bidding
eBay auction created to raise money for the Justin Wilson Children's Fund
is closing in on the $200,000 mark. Combined with sizeable donations made on helmets worn by IndyCar drivers Ryan Hunter-Reay and Graham Rahal prior to the auction, just over $183,000 has been raised so far. Bidding during the first week of the auction has been reserved exclusively for helmets worn by Verizon IndyCar Series drivers."It's amazing to see some of the numbers that are posting on some of the helmets; right now we're just in the phase of Sonoma IndyCar helmets and it blows your mind to see how much has been raised," said Wilson's younger brother Stefan.
"To be close to the $200,000 mark already is incredible. I saw [2015 IndyCar champion] Scott Dixon's helmet was added recently and it went to the top of the bids, and I'm really excited for the rest of the items to start coming out."
Auction Cause, the Los Angeles-based company responsible for managing the Wilson eBay event, will begin adding a number of new items on Monday from drivers and teams in Formula 1, NASCAR, the FIA World Endurance Championship, IMSA, IndyCar, the NHRA, and from outside the world of motor racing. With more than 100 auction items expected to arrive for posting, Wilson's eBay charity drive will continue through the end of October.
"The IndyCar helmets will go through this week, and there are still more that will go up from guys like Will Power and Helio Castroneves, and then on Monday, a lot of the items you've read about will start to go up – a wide variety of items that are unbelievable," Wilson continued.
"Catching up on all the emails today, I've seen all the drivers and teams who are sending things in; there's a huge spreadsheet of donations. Even those who weren't close to Justin have contributed some amazing things. I've gotten a sneak peek, and I think a lot of people are going to be really happy when they see what's in store."
Among the many new items that have been committed, Nick Tandy is donating the driving suit he wore as part of the squad that earned Porsche's 16th overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans La Sarthe in June, and the factory Scuderia Corsa IMSA team is sending the carbon fiber front bumper from the Ferrari F458 Italia [ABOVE RIGHT] that earned a class victory at the 2014 Brickyard Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
