Six spectators killed in Spanish rally

Getting close to the action is a key attraction
of rallying, but also a key danger point.

The ongoing issue of spectators at rally events was brought back front and center when six spectators were killed after a car left the road during the Coruna Rally, a national rally in Spain, on Saturday night.

A Peugeot 206 went off on what is understood to be a fast-left hand corner. The driver, Sergio Tabeayo Sande, lost control and went into a crowd of fans standing among trees.

Six fans were confirmed dead with reports of upward of 10 more injured.

The injured were taken to hospital in the city of Coruna, northwest Spain. The rally was canceled immediately.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy tweeted: "My heartfelt condolences for those killed. I wish the injured a full and speedy recovery."
