NASCAR: Gordon's "Rainbow" scheme to return

Since the first announcement that the 2015 season would be his last as a NASCAR Sprint Cup driver, Jeff Gordon and his Hendrick Motorsports team have been peppered with questions over whether they would bring back the iconic "Rainbow Warriors" paint scheme that Gordon drove from his 1992 rookie NASCAR season with Hendrick through 2000. On Tuesday, team and driver confirmed that the scheme, originally developed for then-primary sponsor DuPont, will indeed make a comeback, updated for current sponsor Axalta.

The four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion unveiled the new rainbow scheme on sponsor Axalta's Twitter handle and the Tuesday edition of "CBS This Morning," driving down West 57th Street in Manhattan. Gordon will drive the car in August's night race at Bristol Motor Speedway (Aug. 22).

"It's such an iconic paint scheme," said the four-time Cup champ, who added that the fans' support was what prompted the No. 24 team to bring it back.

Gordon currently sits 11th in the Sprint Cup standings and would make the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup based on points, but has yet to claim his first win of the season that would all but clinch a spot in NASCAR's playoffs.
