Mick Schumacher takes first victory

Mick Schumacher, the son of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher, claimed his first car racing victory at Oschersleben on Sunday, during the opening round of Germany's ADAC Formula 4 championship.

The karting graduate was ninth and the best of the rookies in race one and 12th in race two. From second on the grid in the final, the 16-year-old passed polesitter Thomas Preining on the opening lap and was never headed.

The race eventually ended behind the safety car, with Schumacher's Van Amersfoort Racing team-mate Joseph Mawson second and Preining third.

"I'm ecstatic, of course. My first race weekend could not have gone better," Schumacher said post-race. "We had a good start, because my tires were still fresh, and it went well from then on, apart from at the end where things were close again. I was not too unhappy about the safety car.

"All in all, I'm really pleased with this start to the season and look forward to the next set of races."

Schumacher leaves Oschersleben fifth in the standings, with Marvin Dienst – the winner of races one and two –on top.

Driving the other Van Amersfoort Racing entry, Harrison Newey was seventh, 13th and 27th in the three races. The son of Red Bull tech chief Adrian Newey sits 12th in the points.
