Global MX-5 Cup: It’s Alive!

The next generation MX-5 comes on line in Japan

Did you hear that? Mazda MX-5 fans around the world just let out a cheer as the Ujina Plant No. 1 in Hiroshima began production of the ND MX-5, the fourth generation of the Miata, today. The initial production run of the lightweight roadster is allocated to the Japanese market, with sales slated to begin in June. U.S. units are expected to hit American dealerships later in the summer.

Earlier this year, the iconic MX-5 exceeded the 950,000-unit production mark. That production volume combined with its loyal following has helped Mazda achieve and hold the Guinness World Record for the world's bestselling two-seater sports car. With such a massive fan base and the buzz surrounding the ND, dealers undoubtedly wont be able to keep the highly anticipated roadsters on the lot for long.

Racers and fans will likely catch their first glimpse of the latest iteration of the MX-5 at speed as Tom Long takes to the track in preparation for the forthcoming 2016 Global MX-5 Cup series. Long will be testing the ND racecar next to the current MX-5 Cup racecars on test days and during practice sessions for the 2015 SCCA Pro Racing Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich Tires.

Preparations on the ND MX-5 Cup test car should be underway shortly, with the goal being to have the car turning laps alongside the current cars at the NOLA Motorsports Park rounds in April.
