IndyCar: Coyne close to driver decisions

With California’s

Alexander Rossi taking the offer from the championship-winning Race Engineering GP2 team

to lead the team this season, Dale Coyne Racing has two seats to fill with just over a month to go until the first Verizon IndyCar Series race at St. Petersburg.

DCR recently tested with Carlos Huertas, who won Round 1 at Houston in 2014, and also conducted another test run with Rodolfo Gonzalez. If both drivers were considered candidates for DCR’s second entry prior to Rossi’s return to GP2, Coyne now has a wider scope of possibilities to consider.

“We’re looking at several people – the ones we’ve testing and a few others ones we haven’t,” Coyne told RACER. “We expect to make decisions next week.”

The Illinois-based team has worked from a two-car dynamic in recent years where a race-winning veteran and an up-and-coming driver work together, and with Justin Wilson evaluating his options as a free agent, Coyne says he’s not sure whether he’ll stick with the veteran/rookie routine, or change things up.

“It’s 50-50. We may go with two young guns, and we could work it out where we go the other way like it’s been,” he noted. “It’s all coming together quickly. We’re very pleased with the test we had at Sebring, the car performance, and we’re moving in the right direction.”

Coyne also explained the situation with Wilson, who has yet to sign a deal for 2015.

“The door is certainly open,” he confirmed. “We’re looking for some sponsorship to help to pull that off. We’ve invested a lot of money in him and we think it’s paid off. We’re definitely open to continuing with Justin. Now we’re looking to see how the team leaves will align this year.”
