NASCAR: Cup car stolen en route to Atlanta
The Team Xtreme Chevrolet that Travis Kvapil was due to drive in this weekend's Atlanta NASCAR Sprint Cup race has been stolen on the way to the event.
Kvapil revealed on Twitter that the car was taken from outside the team's hotel in Morrow, Ga. The team added that hotel surveillance video showed that the alleged theft happened Friday at 5:32 a.m. It was in a trailer attached to a pick-up truck at the time, having traveled separately from Xtreme's main hauler as adverse weather during the week led many NASCAR teams to alter their arrangements for getting from their workshops to Atlanta.
Team Xtreme has now withdrawn from the event.
"What a crazy story," Kvapil told FOX Sports 1. "I got some voicemails and some texts this morning, and I kind of thought the guys were just screwing with me. They said they had problems with the car and I guess they had big problems with the car – it was stolen."
The #44 Xtreme Chevrolet had finished 32nd in last weekend's Daytona 500 (pictured) with Reed Sorenson.
"While this is obviously a setback for this weekend, our plans remain to compete in the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup season," team owner John Cohen said. "We are working closely with the Morrow police in hopes that our truck, trailer and race car are safely returned."
