WRC announces return to Corsica for 2015

The World Rally Championship will return to Corsica for the first time since 2008 this season after its previous French event fell through.

The Corsica move had been expected following the announcement that Alsace no longer had the financial wherewithal to support its Strasbourg-based WRC round. The governing body of French motorsport, FFSA, today confirmed the Tour of Corsica would run as its qualifying WRC round on Oct. 1-4.

The FFSA statement said the event would aim "to renew with the past in which the French event forged its reputation. The route will consist of a succession of very long special stages that will highlight the Haute Corse region and the south of Corsica."

The Tour of Corsica was focused around the town of Ajaccio during its previous period in the WRC, but in its recent years as a European Rally Championship round it has moved further south. This year's rally had been scheduled to start in Porto-Vecchio.

There has been no announcement from the ERC regarding whether it will run in conjunction with the WRC. An ERC-qualifying Tour of Corsica had been scheduled to run a month later, from Nov. 5-7.

It is understood that the Rally of Valais could return to the ERC schedule in place of the French island classic.
