The one new Prototype team set to compete in next week’s Rolex 24 at Daytona has finalized its lineup. Veteran racer David Cheng will partner with RG Racing owner/driver Robert Gewirtz, Mark Kvamme, and Shane Lewis, as the four-man rotation shares the No. 66 Riley-BMW DP.
“The final piece of the puzzle just fell in place with David,” Gewirtz told RACER, “And I’m really excited about having two Pros with David and Shane, and now it’s up to me and Mark to make sure they have a healthy car so we can all get to the finish.”
Gewirtz, an Ohio-based neurosurgeon, purchased an ex-Michael Shank Racing DP and has assembled a trusted crew to help make his endurance racing dreams come true. If there’s a team for fans to support at Daytona, RG Racing is the perfect underdog outfit to rally behind.
“Absolutely – I definitely have an appreciation for the size of the task in front of us,” Gewirtz noted. “The biggest education for me has been team management, and it has made be appreciate the guys like Michael Shank, Peter Baron, Chip Ganassi – it’s not easy, and it’s really expensive. I need to be able to pay my mortgage next month, and this isn’t the best way to go about that…”
Gewirtz can’t wait for his team to take the green flag on Jan. 24 at Daytona, and says he’s working to make RG Racing more than a one-time entrant in 2015.
“I’ll have guests at the race from a few sponsors we’re hoping to bring in, and if we only get to do Daytona this year, that’s OK,” he added. “But we’re working on bringing in sponsors to allow us to do more races as soon as possible.”
