Scalextric slot cars put art in motion
Scalextric's latest slot car sets are integrating digital controls to produce unprecedented levels of realism
in the staging of races, but of course that realism would be largely wasted without equally detailed cars. Fortunately, the British manufacturer has been renowned for its quality and realism since 1957, and continues to push the boundaries with its latest models, which feature a wide variety of racecars road, rally cars and more from the past and present in both open- and closed-wheel form. You can drive vintage F1 cars from the like Dan Gurney's Eagle (BELOW) or Lewis Hamilton's 2014-title-winning Mercedes (ABOVE, available now for pre-order). Vintage Trans-Am cars (LEFT) to modern road cars – even a VW surfer bus! All feature a remarkable level of scaled detail, down to painting of the driver's uniforms. And they completely cover the rugged and high-performance slot car chassis. Scalextric also offers a variety of additional accessories to add to your track to increase the level of realism, including pit crews, builds and more.
The cars are designed to run without the need for any significant maintenance, although you can ensure that the electric motor is running at its optimum by adding a single drop of oil (3-in-1 light oil) to the ends of the motor shaft. It's also a good idea to clean all moving parts such as the pinion gear, axle gears and the axle bearings as well as adding a small amount of oil to these components. Electrical contact cleaner can be used to clean the internal motor brushes but be sure to only carry out this maintenance on a cold motor.

.Motor Specifications
Scalextric motors are expected to be used at 12 to 15v. In practice they will work up to 18v without much problem. Using motors above 20v seriously shortens their life.
In basic terms, current draw is 0.5 to 1Amp. However, strength of magnet, weight of car, grip of tires are just three factors that effect current draw. The standard Mabuchi S (SP) motor or Mabuchi slimline (FF) motor fitted to most Scalextric cars are rated at 18,000 RPM measured at 12v.
