Whincup claims sixth V8 Supercar championship

Jamie Whincup clinched a record sixth V8 Supercars championship with his 13th win of the year in race two at Phillip Island.

Whincup's last remaining title rival Mark Winterbottom grabbed the lead off the start, but a slight slip at the first corner on lap four gave Whincup enough of a run to pass him.

While Whincup then made his escape, his Triple Eight Holden teammate Craig Lowndes also passed Winterbottom to give the dominant squad another one-two.

Whincup's 2014 title is his fourth in a row, and has been secured with three races to spare across day two at Phillip Island and December's Sydney finale.

Winterbottom held on for third despite Garth Tander gaining on him late on as he mounted another race charge.

Tander had to come through from eighth on the grid, losing a little time with a trip over the grass before making it to fourth via a long battle with Todd Kelly's Nissan.

Kelly fended off race one winner Scott McLaughlin, Michael Caruso, Rick Kelly and Chaz Mostert to claim fifth.
