"McQueen: The Man & Le Mans" documentary in the works
Production has begun on a documentary scheduled for theatrical release about the making of Steve McQueen's revered movie "Le Mans" in 1970. "McQueen: The Man & Le Mans" started filming at Le Mans this spring and will continue in France and the U.S. this summer.
The documentary will include sequences with Chad McQueen, son of the screen icon who was with his father during the filming of "Le Mans" as a boy, and will retrace his father's footsteps at the Le Mans Classic vintage event.
"I remember my time as a boy on the set in Le Mans as though it were yesterday so it is exciting to return," said Chad McQueen. "My dad set out to make the most realistic racing film ever, and it was one of the most personally important films in his career, which is why now, more than 40 years later, I believe he would have been proud that it has become one of the greatest stories about racing ever told."
Other interviews scheduled for the film include five-time Le Mans winner and former McQueen housemate Derek Bell, Jonathan Williams, who drove the camera car at Le Mans in 1970, and David Piper, who lost a leg during the original filming. Archival footage, including some previously undiscovered interviews with Steve McQueen during the filming of "Le Mans," will also be part of the documentary.
Veteran Le Mans reporter, Andrew Marriot, who devised the original concept for the documentary, will serve as executive producer on the project.
