VW boss "surprised" at WRC revamp objections

Volkswagen team principal Jost Capito says he has been surprised by the reticence to his proposed changes for next year's World Rally Championship.

Capito is working alongside WRC Promoter on a plan to spice up the last day of WRC rounds next season by turning the final test into a shootout that would decide the leading positions. He is fervent in his belief this is the way forward for the series, but adds that if he is proved wrong, the system can be easily discarded as it does not require any format changes for rallies.

"I believe in this," he said. "We cannot continue as we are right now and I'm surprised at people who can't see this. We need more visibility. But if this plan is not working next year then it is very easy to change it back.

"The organizers of rallies don't have to change anything, they don't have to do anything to the itinerary. It's just some paperwork which needs a change, nothing else. We have to be open-minded here, we have to try things.

"It's not the intention to change again at the end of 2015 – that kind of thing really does not help the sport in the long run – but it wouldn't be a problem if we had to."

The changes will be discussed further at the WRC Commission in August, with a formal approval expected at the FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting in September.
