Heavy rain cancels second WTCC race

The second race of the World Touring Car Championship at the Slovakia-Ring has been cancelled due to persistent rain which has been judged to have made track conditions unsafe.

ROAL Motorsport's Tom Chilton, who finished fifth in race one, commented: "I had never driven a car that aquaplaned so much before the first race. It is the same tread as last year's tire, but it is wider so it's like a doughnut behind a speedboat – it skims across the water.

"This circuit is a very, very flat circuit and it hasn't been designed with a slight curve. It holds the water and it has been raining solidly for five hours. It is just going to be dangerous to continue – even behind the safety car we had to tell it to slow down."

The decision means championship leader Jose Maria Lopez leaves Slovakia having extended his advantage in the standings from ten entering the weekend to 25 points. Citroen teammate Sebastien Loeb won the rain-affected first race.
