Hansen, Andersson dominate RallyX Americas Round 3 at Eldora

A week after rolling out of the second final at Crandon, Timmy Hansen dominated RallyX Americas’ Round 3 Hypercar A Final under the lights at Eldora Speedway.

Hansen started the six-lap final from pole after winning his Semifinal and faced an early challenge from fellow semi winner and front row starter Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky, but light contact between the pair through the sweeping first corner allowed Hansen to escape and dropped JC Raceteknik’s Ahlin-Kottulinsky into the clutches of OMSE driver Oliver Eriksson.

Behind them, SET Promotion’s Tommi Hallman had got by OMSE’s Kevin Eriksson on the second lap, while both Ahlin-Kottulinsky and Lia Block opted for the Joker. For Block though, she missed part of it and would end up needing to take the longer route again later in the race.

While Oliver Eriksson continued to hunt down Hansen, Hallman went for the Joker on lap three, a crucial move that would allow him to overhaul the younger Eriksson brother when he – along with his brother Kevin – took it a lap later.

Hansen left his Joker for the final lap, but had built up enough of an advantage to maintain the lead afterwards. He crossed the line 1.333s ahead of Hallman, becoming the third different winner in as many rounds with Oliver Eriksson third, Kevin Eriksson fourth, and Ahlin-Kottulinsky and Block rounding out the field.

Crucially, Round 1 winner and points leader Robin Larsson was absent from the A Final.

He finished fifth in the first Semifinal (with only the top three advancing to the A main) after a thrilling battle with Kevin Eriksson, which came to a head when Eriksson went for the joker on lap 4 of that race, but tagged Larsson on the way in, sending him into the wall.

Larsson got some redemption in the B Final, however, winning ahead of series debutant Amanda Sorensen – taking the car earmarked for Tanner Foust that was raced by Mitchell DeJong at Crandon – and Jimmy Henderson.

Sorensen got the holeshot and held the lead early on, but contact with Henderson in the Joker on lap 4 opened the door for Larsson, who'd jokered earlier. A last lap spin into a tire wall for Henderson left him finishing third of the three runners in the B Final.

Despite missing the A Final, Larsson continues to lead the Hypercar standings ahead of Hallman, with Kevin Eriksson in third.

In Supercar, Lukas Andersson led from lights to flag, resisting an early charge from Banks Hovery.

With Andersson breaking free on lap 2, Hovey fell into Tyler Leach's clutches and was passed by the SET Promotion driver on lap 3 after Hovey jokered.

When Leach jokered a lap later, he was able to maintain position, taking second behind Andersson with Hovey third.

Gary Donoghe took fourth in his first RallyX Americas outing ahead of Alasdair Scully and Johnny Holtger, who both suffered spins.

Dominik often jokes that he was born in the wrong country – a lover of NASCAR and IndyCar, he covered both in a past life as a junior at Autosport in the UK, but he’s spent most of his career to date covering the sliding and flying antics of the U.S.’ interpretation of rallycross. Rather fitting for a man that says he likes “seeing cars do what they’re not supposed to do”, previously worked for a car stunt show, and once even rolled a rally car with Travis Pastrana. He was also comprehensively beaten in a kart race by Sebastien Loeb once, but who hasn’t been?
