Schumacher named Indy 500 Rookie of the Year
Mick Schumacher’s first run at the Indianapolis 500 resulted in the Swiss-born German being selected as the 2026 Rookie of the Year by the voting members of the press.
Schumacher ran as high as fifth in the No. 47 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda during the 200-lap contest and crossed the finish line—despite a late meeting with the wall—as the first rookie home and the only rookie to complete every lap.
"Winning rookie of the year at the Indy 500 was great,” Schumacher told RACER. “We had Caio [Collet] and Dennis [Hauger] in the rookie class as well, and they were really quick, so it was not an easy task to get out there and do what we did, and I think we can be really proud of that.”
The 26-year-old is already thinking of his return to race in the 111th running of the Indy 500.
“I'm looking forward to the next one and what next year will be like. Going there as a veteran and having the experience that I have from this year will be great,” he said. “It’s a great thing for the team; we're really happy that we put everything together after all of the hard work that we put in. There is still a lot to learn and a lot to take away and learn from the positives and the negatives that we had this month. It’s a great thing and I'm really grateful for it."
