Alon Day scores maiden TA2 win at Lime Rock
TeamSLR driver Alon Day earned his first CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series victory under wet conditions at Lime Rock in his fifth career start, just 24 hours removed from earning his first career pole in the series. It was his fourth consecutive podium finish, preceded by a third-place finish March 14 at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, and runner-up finishes in both races of the April 25-26 weekend doubleheader at Sonoma Raceway.
He was joined on the podium by his teammates Ben Maier and Connor Mosack, who finished second and third respectively.
“I didn’t know exactly what to expect when I started the race," said Day. "I love to drive in the rain, but here, it’s such a narrow track, very fast. If you just touch the grass a bit, you’re going straight to the wall. So it was very, very difficult. I had to concentrate 100 percent, and that’s really demanding."
Maier, the 17-year-old from Chester, Maryland, made his first TA2 Series start of the season, the 27th of his career, and first with TeamSLR. Saturday’s runner-up finish, 5.835 seconds behind his teammate Day, was his third career TA2 Series podium. His previous podiums both came in 2024, when he won from the pole at World Wide Technology Raceway outside St. Louis, and finished second after starting on the pole at the Pittsburgh International Race Complex.
"I was in the No. 8 car this weekend," said Maier. "Definitely felt the weight on my shoulders because of that and losing Kyle Busch. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his whole family. Today was a really tough race. The line was really fast this weekend and I thought saving a little bit at the beginning and falling back, saving my rear tires a little bit, would’ve given me the edge in the end, but it didn’t really help me too much in the end.
"But I want to thank TeamSLR and everyone at Chevrolet – Scott Speed, Josh Wise, Dan Stratton and Dan Jansen – for making this whole race possible and making me the best person I can be. It was a really fun weekend.”
Third-place finisher Mosack put the No. 27 on the podium after receiving the call-up to fill in for injured teammate Lanie Buice, who spent the weekend continuing her recovery from the aftereffects of an accident during a Late Model event last weekend at Tri County Speedway. It was his second podium finish in the last three races.
“I’d just like to say it’s been a little bit of a heavy weekend losing Kyle Busch," said Mosack, who also races in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. "He’s my teammate in the Truck Series this year, so that hits home. Obviously not at the NASCAR event this weekend, but I’m really happy to be here. It just makes you grateful to be able to be behind the wheel of racecars.
"Lanie had a hard crash last weekend, so I got the call to fill in for her. So, just thank you to Chevrolet, Sunoco, Guthrie’s Garage, and TeamSLR for having me this weekend. I love coming back and driving these cars, and especially here at Lime Rock in the rain. It’s always a fun race."
