Allgaier to substitute for Bowman in Vegas

Alex Bowman will miss his second consecutive NASCAR Cup Series race as he continues to recover from vertigo. In his place, Justin Allgaier will drive the No. 48 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports in Sunday’s event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Allgaier is a full-time competitor in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series for JR Motorsports, an affiliate team of Hendrick Motorsports. Rick Hendrick has an ownership stake in JR Motorsports.

Bowman was diagnosed with vertigo after the Circuit of The Americas race on March 1. He was unable to finish the event due to the onset of symptoms and was then sidelined for the following event at Phoenix Raceway (March 8).

“Alex continues to work closely with doctors toward being medically cleared, but he’s still experiencing some lingering symptoms,” said Jeff Andrews, president and general manager of Hendrick Motorsports. “He’s put a lot into the recovery process, and we will continue to support him every step of the way. Our priority remains making sure Alex is fully ready before returning to the race car.”

Allgaier has made 84 starts in the Cup Series. In addition to qualifying for the Daytona 500 with JR Motorsports the last two seasons, he drove the No. 5 for Hendrick Motorsports in the Coca-Cola 600 in 2004 when Kyle Larson attempted the Memorial Day weekend double.
