Legacy Motor Club, Rick Ware Racing resolve charter dispute

Legacy Motor Club and Rick Ware Racing have reached a resolution over the sale of a charter that had led to a lawsuit between the two sides.

“I met with both Jimmie [Johnson] and Cal Wells recently, and we came to an agreement to sell and transfer a charter from RWR to Legacy Motor Club,” Rick Ware said in a statement. “I believe we landed in a mutually beneficial place for both teams, and the result will be a clear path forward for us all. I look forward to putting all of our focus on finishing the 2025 season strong.”

The terms of the deal are confidential. Legacy Motor Club had been seeking an additional charter to expand to a three-car organization and had a deal with Ware that fell apart earlier this season. As a result, Legacy sued Ware over breach of contract. Ware disputed the terms of the agreement, believing it was for the 2027 season and not 2026.

Ware later counter-sued Legacy Motor Club over the sale, alleging a dispute over which designated charter was for sale. A litigation was scheduled to go to trial in January 2026.

“Reaching a positive outcome was important for everyone involved,” Johnson said in a statement. “I truly respect the effort put forth by Robby Benton and Rick Ware to reach a settlement so we may all focus on our business operations and future goals. I’m glad this is behind us and we can all move forward in unison.”

Ware has ownership of two charters. The team is competing with one for the No. 51 entry of Cody Ware, while the second charter is currently being leased to RFK Racing.
