Eriksson replaces Frijns at Envision

Envision Racing has announced Joel Eriksson as Robin Frijns’ replacement at the team alongside Sebastien Buemi for the coming Formula E season.

The Swede had his first experience of Formula E at the 2018 rookie test in Marrakesh where he drove for Envision. From 2019 to 2021 he was the test and reserve driver for Dragon Penske Autosport and later made eight starts for the American-owned team in the 2020-21 season, taking a best finish of 10th in the second London race.

For the last three seasons he has been a test and reserve driver for Jaguar TCS Racing but returned to a race seat in the 2023-24 season with Jaguar customer Envision, driving in Berlin alongside Paul Aron as both Buemi and Frijns focused on their World Endurance Championship commitments. There, he had a best finish of ninth in the second race after retiring from the Saturday contest.

“We are very excited to announce Joel as our newest driver,” said Sylvain Filippi, Envision Racing managing director and CTO. “We have known Joel for a number of years now, going back to his first ever Formula E test with us, and racing for us last season in Berlin. On both occasions he proved to us how talented he is and adapted very quickly to the Formula E style of racing in Berlin, delivering points on debut.

“With Joel’s extensive knowledge and experience working on the simulator with Jaguar, we are confident that he will deliver for us, and we will be doing all we can to help him hit the ground running.”

As well as his Formula E commitments, Eriksson has been a regular in GT racing in recent seasons, racing in Germany's ADAC GT Masters series, as well as the Nurburgring Endurance Series, the Intercontinental GT Challenge series, and the GT World Challenge Asia and GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup.

He also raced in DTM with BMW for two seasons in 2018 and '19, winning at Misano in the first of those seasons, and taking podiums at Zolder and the Norisring in the second.

“I am delighted to have signed with Envision Racing, it is a huge moment in my career and one that I have been working towards for a while,” said Eriksson. “I am very thankful to the team for their trust, and I can’t wait to get started for my first full season of Formula E.”

Dominik often jokes that he was born in the wrong country – a lover of NASCAR and IndyCar, he covered both in a past life as a junior at Autosport in the UK, but he’s spent most of his career to date covering the sliding and flying antics of the U.S.’ interpretation of rallycross. Rather fitting for a man that says he likes “seeing cars do what they’re not supposed to do”, previously worked for a car stunt show, and once even rolled a rally car with Travis Pastrana. He was also comprehensively beaten in a kart race by Sebastien Loeb once, but who hasn’t been?
