McLaughlin tops early running as rain again delays Indy 500 practice

Scott McLaughlin was quick to make up for lost time when cars finally took to the track for Indianapolis 500 practice on Wednesday.

Overnight rains blanketed the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, forcing a delay in the start of Wednesday’s extended session that was due to start at 10am ET. Cars finally took to the track at around 3:15pm local time, and within 30 minutes McLaughlin had rattled off a 229.493mph lap in the No.3 Team Penske Chevrolet, putting him comfortably clear of closest rival Alexander Rossi of Arrow McLaren (227.484mph).

The session has been extended to 7pm ET.

Teams were able to get out for approximately 20 minutes of running on Tuesday for opening day running before rain intervened. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon topped the field with a tow-assisted lap of 229.107mph to lead the 29 drivers who ventured out.
