Remembering motorsports author and historian Tom Schultz
Tom Schultz, Road America's Track Historian and author of several books including The Meister Brauser: Harry Heuer's Championship Racing Team, passed away last weekend while on vacation in the Dominican Republic.
A proud graduate of Marquette High School and University, Schultz served in the United States Army and National Guard in the late 1960s and early '70s, where he reached the rank of Captain. Following his eight years of military service, Schultz dedicated the next several decades to family, to community life, and to his enthusiasm for motorsports.
A Wauwatosa, Wis., town Alderman for many years, Schultz was also active in the local Kiwanis Club and retired as a vice president of Tri City National Bank. He was a published author of several books, including books celebrating the history of Road America. (Excerpts can be found on the Road America website.)
His passion for history and love of motorsports made him a natural fit to serve voluntarily as Road America’s Official Track Historian. Schultz spent several decades documenting the central Wisconsin road course’s rich history, including the many iconic drivers and memorable races.
His dedication to preserving the history of Road America earned him the coveted Governor’s Cup award distinction and his efforts will forever be cherished by the motorsports community.
Schultz was a beloved husband of 55 years to his wife, Jean, a proud father of two and grandfather of five.
Road America President and General Manager Mike Kertscher expressed his condolences to the Schultz family and praised Schultz’s contributions to the track, stating, “Tom was a valued member of the Road America family and will be deeply missed. His dedication to documenting our rich history has left a lasting impact on our organization and the motorsports community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Schultz family during this difficult time.”
Schultz was an avid reader of Vintage Motorsport and his letters to the editor (often including a gentle correction) were prevalent throughout the years of the magazine.
A Go Fund Me page has been established to support his family as they have endured additional expenses following his passing — further details are available on the Go Fund Me page HERE.
