Mazda paces Detroit warm-up

Harry Tincknell took the checkered flag for Saturday morning’s warm-up with a lap of 1m20.957 to take top honors in the 20-minute session, setting the scene for today’s Chevrolet Sports Car Classic.

Tincknell set his lap in the No. 55 Mazda Team Joest Mazda DPi, eclipsing the Team Penske Acuras that were second and third with near-identical times. Helio Castroneves turned a lap of 1m21.590s in the No. 7 Acura DPi, .007s faster than teammate Dane Cameron in the No. 6 Acura.

The session was conducted under overcast skies and 67 degrees. Scattered thunderstorms are forecast beginning at 2 p.m.; the checkered flag for the 100-minute sprint is scheduled for 2:20 p.m. ET.

Felipe Nasr was fastest of the Cadillacs, fifth quickest at 1m21.885s in the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R. Cadillacs took six of the final seven positions in the 11-car DPi field, looking to extend GM’s streak in the event to seven in a row.

Mario Farnbacher led GTD, 1m30.375s in the No. 86 Meyer Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3.

UP NEXT: Green flag at 12:40 p.m. ET (Live, NBCSN, 12:30 p.m.).
