Harvick chasing history in Phoenix
Kevin Harvick has made ISM Raceway his personal playground over the years, and if he were to do the same Sunday afternoon it would also be historical.
If Harvick wins the TicketGuardian 500, he will become just the sixth driver with 10 or more NASCAR Cup Series victories at a single track.
The Stewart-Haas Racing driver sits at nine wins in 32 starts in Phoenix and has been nearly unstoppable at the track since he joined SHR in 2014, winning five of the last 10 races there. That includes a three-race winning streak through the 2014 season and the spring ’15 race.
Harvick’s most recent win in Phoenix came one year ago this weekend.
“When we go to Phoenix, we are always going for the win,” Harvick said. “That’s been a great racetrack for me,personally, and since I’ve been at SHR, it’s become statistically one of our best racetracks as far as win counts go. It’s definitely a racetrack that we circle every year where we think we should have an opportunity to win.”
Harvick has a 9.3 average finish at ISM Raceway, which makes it his third-best racetrack behind Homestead (6.6) and the Charlotte road course (9.0). He’s also led 1,594 laps in Phoenix.
The five other drivers with 10 or more wins at a track are Richard Petty (15 at Martinsville and North Wilkesboro, 13 at Richmond, 11 at Rockingham, and 10 at Daytona), Darrell Waltrip (12 at Bristol, 11 at Martinsville, 10 at North Wilkesboro), Jimmie Johnson (11 at Dover), David Pearson (10 at Darlington), and Dale Earnhardt (10 at Talladega).
