De Vries sets the pace on Day 1 of Formula 2 pre-season testing

By

Nyck de Vries ended Day 1 of the first 2019 FIA Formula 2 pre-season test at Jerez de la Frontera atop the time sheets. The ART Grand Prix ace set the quickest lap in both the morning and afternoon sessions, besting both Nicholas Latifi and Mick Schumacher.

On a sunny southern Spain morning, Latifi was the first driver to hit the track for the DAMS team with the rest, all in the F2 spec turbo V6 Mecachrome-powered Dallaras following quickly. Schumacher (PREMA Racing) set the first fast lap time, but Louis Delétraz (Carlin Racing) topped the timesheets at the one hour mark.

The morning session was briefly red flagged after Latifi’s DAMS teammate Sergio Sette Camâra spun and stopped at Turn 1. When testing resumed, Callum Ilott (Sauber Junior Team by Charouz) was initially quickest, but Delétraz soon reclaimed the top spot.

With one hour to go, de Vries clocked a 1m 26.044s which held to the end, Sette Camâra slotting in just behind the Dutchman and just ahead of teammate Latifi.

The proceedings resumed two hours later with Delétraz first man onto the track, but it was Ilott who set the early pace in a 1m 26.573s ahead of teammate Juan Manuel Correa and Schumacher.

The order was re-shuffled following yet another brief red flag period and re-start, Schumacher moving to the top only to have his time bettered by the UNI Virtuosi team’s
Luca Ghiotto.

Two more red flag periods cost all the teams valuable time, but in the closing minutes, as the track went live one last time, de Vries reeled off a 1m 25.358s to top the afternoon session and the day overall, tenths ahead of Latifi and Schumacher who also improved in the dying minutes. Ghiotto wound up fourth, last man in the 1m 25’s.

Day 2 of testing will commence on Wednesday at 09.00 local time.
